Launched in 2016, Houseparty was a video chat app that simulated a casual gathering by allowing users to join existing “rooms” or “parties” and play games within the app. It allowed groups of up to eight people to connect face-to-face through video conversations. With features like private “lockable” rooms and games like “Heads Up!” and Uno to promote social engagement, the app linked users with friends and friends of friends. Houseparty was shut down in 2021 after the firm shifted its attention to in-game social features after being acquired by Epic Games in 2019.
